Make a winter garden wreath by collecting material that you find in your yard or in the woods. Making wreaths is a fun activity and designing one from material found in nature makes the wreath unique. You can use any base for the wreath but in this design I used a natural balsam base and then added winter berries, dried fountain grass plumes and assorted herbs from my greenhouse garden and pine cones. Be creative with your garden wreath by using what you have. A winter wreath is a practical way to decorate as you can display this wreath throughout the season and it looks especially nice during the Christmas season. Step1 Purchase a fresh balsam wreath at your local fresh cut Christmas tree store. Or anywhere that sells the entwined balsam branches. Gently open up the branches so that the wreath appears full and not flat.
Step 2 Gather your materials for the wreath. Cut berries from shrubs in your yard or find this material by hiking on a nature trail. Collect pinecones, herb sprigs, seed heads, ivy anything that is in nature that would add interest to your garden wreath. Place the material on the work table. Step 3 Set the wreath on top of the table and place the material on top of the wreath. By doing this you will be able to determine if the material placement is correct. Balance your colors so that the wreath is eye appealing; add feature material such as a pine cones, or a cluster of red winter berries.
Step 4 Attach the pinecones to the wreath with wire. Add the other material by working it into the wreath. Work the grass plumes into the wreath so that they add interest to your design. The evergreen branches will hold the material as long as the stem is three inches long. Step 5 Hang the wreath on your garden gate, a wooden fence or decorate your front porch with the wreath by hanging on an exterior wall. Tips: Making a wreath is a fun activity for you and your family. Choose a day when you and your family can go to the park to gather materials for the wreath. Spending time in nature during the winter season with your family is how memories are made.
